Yom Haatmaut 2021

Native Israeli with jeans and BBQ; immigrant dressed in blue and white with tears of joy

Before we made Aliyah, our Yom HaAtzmaut family tradition was making falafel, pita, and Israeli salad and opening cans of Israeli pickles and olives. I would fill ziplocks with chocolate milk and cut off the ends so my kids could feel what it was like to drink shoko b’sakit.

We arrived here and the tradition remained in place, only to discover that most native Israelis don’t eat “classic” Israeli foods on Independence day. They have more of an American style BBQ. Who knew?

Happy Yom HaAtzmaut however you celebrate!
